Description :-
The Knobless Cylinders - Teakwood is a Montessori material designed to help children explore the
relationship between height and width in cylinders, which aids in the development of their sensory
discrimination and understanding of geometric properties. This material consists of four sets of
cylinders housed in teakwood boxes, each corresponding to one of the cylinder blocks typically
found in Montessori classrooms.
Set of Four Teakwood Boxes:
Each box contains a set of 10 cylinders—10 blue cylinders for block "A" 10 red cylinders for block "B" 10 yellow cylinders for block "C"and 10 green cylinders for block "D"
Knobless Design:
Unlike the traditional Cylinder Blocks, these cylinders are not fitted with knobs, which
encourages children to engage more directly with the sensory properties of the material by
handling the cylinders and focusing on their dimensional relationships.
Cylindrical Blocks:
Each block corresponds to a specific relationship between height and diameter of the
cylinders. The children are invited to compare cylinders based on their height and diameter,
helping them develop their ability to perceive subtle differences in size and shape. The cylinders in each block differ in height and diameter, offering opportunities for direct exploration.
Knobless Cylinders - Teakwood
The main educational purpose of the Knobless Cylinders is to help children:
1. Understand Geometric Relationships:
The material helps children explore the relationship between height and diameter (width) of
cylinders. Each set of cylinders shows a different relationship between these two
dimensions, and through manipulation and comparison, children can develop an
understanding of these properties in a concrete way.
2. Develop Sensory Discrimination:
Children are encouraged to discriminate between cylinders based on their size and shape.
By handling the cylinders, children develop their tactile sense, honing their ability to
perceive subtle differences in height and diameter.
3. Enhance Fine Motor Skills:
Although the cylinders are knobless, they are still handled by children, requiring precise fine
motor control. This encourages the development of hand-eye coordination and strengthens
the small muscle groups in the hands and fingers, preparing the child for future tasks
involving writing and other fine motor activities.
4. Promote Order and Classification:
Just like the traditional Cylinder Blocks, the Knobless Cylinders encourage children to
organize and classify objects by specific criteria—in this case, height and diameter. Children may group the cylinders according to size, which helps reinforce logical thinking and
classification skills.
5. Prepare for Mathematical and Geometric Concepts:
By manipulating these cylinders, children gain a practical, tactile foundation for
understanding mathematical concepts such as measurements, scaling, and proportions,
which they will encounter later in more abstract mathematical learning.
