The Dot Game is a Montessori math tool designed to help children practice and understand the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division within the context of the decimal system. This game reinforces the child's understanding of place value and the relationship between numbers at different place values (units, tens, hundreds, thousands, and ten-thousands).
- Board:
The game consists of a hardboard square that has columns labeled with the place values 1, 10, 100, 1000, and 10,000. These columns represent the units of the decimal system, arranged from right to left.
- Squares:
Each column is divided into small squares, with ten squares per horizontal row. This
arrangement mimics the grouping of ten units to form tens, tens to form hundreds, and so on. This layout allows children to clearly see the relationship between units, tens, hundreds, thousands, and ten-thousands.
- Spaces at the Bottom of Each Column:
o The upper space under each column is used to indicate the changing process with dots (representing quantities being added or subtracted). The dots allow children to visually track the progress of mathematical operations.
o The lower space is used to show the result after the operation, allowing for a
concrete demonstration of the outcome.
- Blank Column:
On the right side of the board, there is a blank column, which can be used for writing the result or for additional operations if needed.
