Description :-
The Decanomial Squares is a Montessori material used to help children understand the concept
of squares of binomials, which are mathematical expressions of the form (a+b)2(a+b)2, and so on,
up to (a+b+c+d+… )2The material consists of precisely cut wooden strips, each representing a
specific part of a decano (ten) term square. These strips allow the child to visualize and physically
manipulate the algebraic expansion of squared binomials and higher polynomials.
The set includes 10 strips representing terms for squares up to a,b,c,d,e… )2with each strip marked
to indicate a particular term in the expansion. For example, strips may correspond to the individual
terms of a square like a2a2, 2ab2ab, b2b2, and so on.
The strips are packed in a teak wood box, keeping the material organized and neatly stored.
Deccanomial Squares
The goal of the Decanomial Squares is to introduce children to the concept of squares of binomials
and higher polynomials. By using the strips, children will learn to:
Visually and physically explore the expansion of squared binomials.
Understand the concept of algebraic expressions, focusing on how binomials expand when
squared.
Begin to grasp the algebraic properties of squares and recognize the relationship between
terms in an algebraic expansion.
This material helps children develop their mathematical thinking by bridging the gap
between concrete understanding (physical strips) and abstract algebraic concepts.
